Considerations Regarding the Handling of Hull and Machinery Claims
Date – Monday, April 12, 2010
Time – 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Location – Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company (10 Wellington Street East, Toronto)
Speaker – Howie White, Manager, Marine Survey Division, McLarens Canada
Vessels operating in Canadian waters vary widely in size, type, and role. With this, the geographic extent of our nation means that these vessels are required to operate in many challenging environments. As ocean-going vessels are expensive to build, owners need to maximize their fleets' operational lifetimes, and to deploy them across many roles - oftentimes with the vessel not being suited for purpose. Hull and machinery damage is inevitable, with resulting loss/ damage to life, property, and cargo a real peril.
Topics to be covered:
1.1 Common vessel types and their roles.
1.2 Varied conditions of the Canadian environment.
2.1 Available options when loss/ damage does occur.
2.2 A strategic approach to implement temporary repair, with a mind towards ensuring permanent repair is cost-effective.
3.1 Vessel ownership and chartering.
3.2 Who's liable for cost of repair during charter period?
4.1 Claim prevention through owner preventative maintenance programs.
4.2 Should a qualified review of the preventative maintenance program be a warrantee condition under the policy?
5.1 Big versus small: A homeowner's policy offer covers for "small" recreational vessels. Oftentimes loss/ damage do occur under such policies, involving the application of marine law and insurance. Would a typical property adjuster be aware of the potential exposure?
