OPERATION SAIPH: COUNTER PIRACY AND COUNTER TERRORISM AT SEA

An unregulated ocean is a threat to our way of life. That’s why Canada has deployed ships almost three dozen times since the first Gulf War to the pirate-infested neighbourhood of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Fredericton has spent the last six months “on-station” with NATO’s multinational maritime force off the east coast of Africa under Operation SAIPH. There, HMCS Fredericton’s captain, Commander Steven Waddell, and crew prevented and deterred piracy and terrorism as part of the strategy to improve the region’s security thus providing a safe maritime environment for legitimate mariners.

Commander Waddell will discuss Canada’s leading role in defending the freedom of the seas as part of its continuing commitment to international peace and security. Commander Waddell’s presentation will provide audiences with a rare opportunity to interact with the ship’s captain, hear his first-hand accounts and view operational images from this fascinating deployment. Audiences will gain insight into how relevant, responsive and effective Canada’s navy is in today’s security environment.

A gateway is a system of transportation infrastructure having a significant role in international commerce, including major ports, airports, key border crossings, and road and rail connections to North America's major markets and the global economy. The Atlantic Gateway and Trade Corridor initiative is focused on increasing the volume of trade (passengers and cargo) that travels through the gateway to its final destination. Through the Gateway, Atlantic Canada is positioned to take maximum advantage of global supply chain activity and to find new opportunities in a changing world. Atlantic Gateway is a long-term investment in our regions' future. It's a new understanding of a traditional idea – recognizing our historical role in international trade and using our assets to identify new opportunities. The Atlantic Gateway and Trade Corridor initiative reflects the complex relationships between public and private sectors, among modes of transport and the vast array of countries involved in the global supply chain. The Atlantic Gateway and Trade Corridor initiative is an integrated approach to our region's transportation infrastructure assets and reflects the complexity and connectivity of the modern world.
